The Inspiration

In college, I practically lived off chai lattes. They were my go-to drink and the excuse to hang out with friends—our favorite phrase was, “Let’s go get chai.” It was more than just a coffee run; it was a bonding ritual. But when I went gluten-free, I was stunned to find out that some chai lattes actually had gluten in them. I never realized how many hidden ingredients could be in my favorite coffee shop drinks.

That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands and make my own chai syrup at home. I wanted to keep enjoying that amazing chai flavor without any surprises. This Homemade Chai Simple Syrup is my way of making sure I can whip up delicious, spiced drinks and treats with all the ingredients I know and love.

Kitchenware you’ll need:

  • Saucepan: You’ll mainly need a saucepan, spoon, and some measuring cups to put together this lovely syrup!
  • Syrup Bottles: I love storing my syrup in a syrup bottle to easily add to coffee and pancakes throughout the week! These are too beautiful!

Step by Step Directions:

1. Combine Ingredients in a Saucepan:
Start by gathering all your ingredients: brown sugar, granulated sugar, filtered water, a piece of ginger, maple syrup, cinnamon, vanilla extract, allspice, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, and black pepper. Pour the sugars and water into a medium-sized saucepan. Slice the ginger into thin pieces and add it to the pan along with the rest of the spices and maple syrup.

2. Bring to a Boil:
Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Keep an eye on it and let it boil for about 2 minutes. This step helps the sugars dissolve and the spices start to infuse into the syrup.

3. Simmer and Infuse Flavors:
After boiling, reduce the heat to low. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for 10-15 minutes. This simmering time lets the spices fully release their flavors into the syrup, creating a rich, aromatic blend.

4. Cool and Store:
Once the simmering is done, remove the saucepan from the heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature. Strain out the ginger and any larger spice particles using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Transfer the cooled syrup into a clean glass container or jar for storage.

5. Enjoy Your Syrup:
Your Homemade Chai Simple Syrup is now ready to use! Add it to your coffee, tea, or even pancakes for a deliciously spiced touch. If you prefer a sweeter syrup, feel free to mix in a bit more maple syrup to taste.

With this easy recipe, you can bring the comforting flavors of chai to all your favorite treats and drinks, right from the comfort of your home.
