Looking into an easy weeknight dinner recipe? Look no further, this Soy Free Basil Chicken is IT! This dish is inspired by Thai Basil Chicken with a few twists of my own.

Cooking Dishes without Soy Sauce
OOF! Being unable to have soy sauce has left me unable to eat a lot of dishes when I’m out to eat. I’ve started to cook up some of my own and think I’m close to getting some of the flavors right!
- Coconut Aminos: This is definitely the best substitute I’ve found for soy sauce that is also gluten free. To be honest, I forget what real soy sauce tastes like, but friends have said it’s just slightly sweeter than the real thang, but still tastes delicious!
- I usually buy the Trader Joe’s Coconut Aminos (because they’re cheap…heck yeah), but I also like Big Tree Farms Coconut Aminos as well.
- Sesame Oil: If you’re able to have seeds, sesame oil is a great addition to your dish. I wouldn’t say it’s a replacement for soy sauce, but using it along with coconut aminos creates some awesome flavor!
- Fish Sauce: I love how the flavor of fish sauce compliments a dish, especially one that would normally use soy sauce. I personally don’t eat seafood so I love this Ocean’s Halo Vegan Fish Sauce in my dishes.
Choosing the chicken
I personally decided to make with ground chicken because it makes this dish incredibly easy! You can also go for cubed chicken. If you do decided to do chicken breast or thigh vs. ground chicken, I’d recommend marinating your chicken in the sauce for a few hours (or overnight) prior to cooking.
As someone that was almost a vegetarian at one point, I found my return to cooking meat pretty difficult at first. I love the Sprouts Farmer’s Market organic chicken. I find their chicken to always taste the best and stay super tender, while the cost is relatively average. This is my personal preference and I’m sure there are some other great brands out there.
